What do you know about them? Have you heard about ACOs? Do you know of the local ACOs in your neighborhood?
ACO’s or Accountable Care Organizations are part of the health reform in attempts to curb medical cost all while providing quality care to the patient. The idea is to make sure doctors are providing the best care to the patient (more specific the Medicare beneficiary patient) without padding their own paycheck or making the patient go around the ringer just to get their medical concern addressed. ACO’s bring all providers together, Primary Care Physicians (PCP), specialist, and hospitals. About time, right? Right now, there are different ACO model types out there that CMS is following and monitoring, in hopes of finding the best organizational model that works for patients and for cost reduction.
What does this mean for your parent? For you? Better health care, easier access to healthcare and ease of mind. You as the patient, or your loved one will have more of a “team” when it comes to medical decisions. All of your doctors, i.e. your PCP, cardiologist, endocrinologist will all have access to your updated medical information. By doing so, you have more personalized care. Gone are the days of medication missteps, hospital readmission’s. The aim of ACO’s are to keep you home and well.
A great resource for medicare and medicaid patients is Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. That is a great site to reference as there are constant updates to the ACO models.
